Beautiful, Metal-Free Restorations

Natural Colored Fillings

Tooth fillings are often placed on teeth with cavities, but they can also be used to repair teeth that are broken, cracked or severely worn down from chronic clenching or grinding. Some dentists even use fillings for cosmetic purposes, to improve the shape, length, width or color of a tooth.

Just as fillings have different purposes, they have different materials. Traditionally, fillings were made from silver, gold and metal materials, which not only looked noticeable in the mouth, but also brought up concerns about mercury content and sensitivity. Dr. Andrew Hunter prefers to use natural-colored tooth fillings. El Cajon patients can enjoy perfectly restored teeth without the conspicuous metal materials or possible safety risks.

Benefits of Natural-Colored Tooth Fillings

Fillings are designed to fill the portion of the tooth that has been removed because of decay. Without a filling in place, the decay can return and compromise even more of the tooth structure.

Natural or tooth-colored fillings are virtually invisible in the mouth. They can be used on teeth in the front or the back of the mouth. The filling material mimics the natural color, texture and translucence of enamel without looking artificial or conspicuous. With tooth-colored fillings, the smile can maintain its youthful and attractive qualities.

Tooth-colored fillings are strong and can last a very long time. The composite resin material bonds directly to the tooth, helping to reinforce it. A tooth with a natural-colored filling can chew and bite hard or crunchy foods without any problem.

Treatment Details

Dr. Hunter will first consult with you about your options in filling material, discussing strength, appearance, cost and longevity of each option. He will recommend tooth-colored fillings only if he feels they are the best solution for your needs, based on the condition of your mouth, the size of the area that needs to be restored and the location of the tooth in your mouth.

The first step to placing a filling is to remove any dental decay. Dr. Hunter will ensure the tooth is completely clear of bacteria and debris before placing the filling. He will place a primer material to prep the tooth to receive the filling. Then, he will place the composite resin filling material into the tooth. A special bonding light will harden the material in place.

Once Dr. Hunter has placed the filling, he will check your bite to make sure the filling fits comfortably. He can make any last-minute adjustments as needed and polish the filling so it looks natural and translucent (like tooth enamel).

You will receive special instructions for caring for your filling and preventing future tooth decay. As long as you follow these instructions, brush and floss daily and see Dr. Hunter regularly, your tooth-colored filling should last a very long time.
