Replicate the Look and Feel of a Natural Tooth
An excellent way to save a tooth that has been compromised by significant damage or decay is to place a crown. These dental restorations replicate virtually the entire exterior of the tooth, providing strength and support and protecting it from further damage.
There’s no reason to sacrifice appearance for function, so Dr. Andrew Hunter places crowns crafted from realistic-looking ceramic materials. Porcelain crowns are custom-created to be virtually identical to natural teeth and blend seamlessly into the mouth. If you are in need of porcelain crowns in El Cajon, Dr. Hunter would be happy to handle your care.
Could I Benefit from a Porcelain Crown?
Porcelain crowns may be appropriate for your case if you have any of the following:
- Broken or fractured teeth
- Substantial chips or cracks on the teeth
- Major tooth decay
- Other types of serious damage
If the damage is predominantly cosmetic in nature, Dr. Hunter may recommend repairing it with a cosmetic dentistry solution. For example, he can place porcelain veneers to conceal small chips or cracks, or perform dental bonding on the teeth to build up tooth structure.
On the other hand, if the tooth does not have sufficient remaining structure, Dr. Hunter can recommend a better option for restoration or replacement (e.g., a dental bridge).
Traditionally, porcelain crowns were placed in a two-step process. First, Dr. Hunter would take measurements and molds of the mouth and send the information to the dental laboratory tasked with creating the crown. The crown would take about two weeks to construct, and Dr. Hunter would place a temporary crown in the meantime. Once the permanent crown was ready, a second visit would occur. The temporary crown would be removed and the permanent crown bonded into place.
However, the revolutionary CEREC system enables Dr. Hunter to fit, craft and place high quality porcelain veneers in a single visit. Here’s how it works:
You and Dr. Hunter will discuss your specific needs and goals during consultation. He will take digital impressions and use computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) technology to design your crowns. The specifications will be programmed into the CEREC machine, which will mill your crown from a block of porcelain. While the crown is being fabricated, Dr. Hunter will remove a small amount of tooth enamel to make room to accommodate the crown.
After your CEREC crown is ready, Dr. Hunter will place it over the exterior of your tooth. He will apply a light-sensitive resin between your natural tooth and crown, and harden the resin with a special curing light. Dr. Hunter will check the crown’s fit within your bite and ensure it feels comfortable and secure. Finally, he will polish the new crown so it looks translucent like natural tooth enamel.
Your crown should be brushed and flossed like a natural tooth, and Dr. Hunter should check it approximately every six months to identify any potential problems. With the proper care and follow-up, your crown may last for many years.
